I have completed all five modules of this course, these being Portable Appliance Testing for the Theatre, Fundamentals of Electrical Installation, Knots & Splicing, Counterweight Flying and Manual Handling.

BA (Honours) Theatre Practice at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Sept 1999 – June 2002

Specialising in production sound, which included positions such as Chief Production Sound during the Embassy Theatre renovation, and subsequent performance of the musical gala Sweeney Todd. Also included design roles on shows such as Six Degrees of Separation. The course has allowed for additional roles in allied areas such as lighting rigger at The Circus Space and assistant organiser on the inaugural Theatre Sound Colloquium, hosted by CSSD, the Royal National Theatre and OISTAT.

Professional work includes freelance techncian at the Beck Theatre, show staff on Cats, Witches of Eastwick and Bombay Dreams, and freelance technician at the Aldwych and Prince of Wales Theatres.

HND: Theatre Lighting and Sound Design at the Oldham College. Sept 1997 – July 1999

Included a broad range of voluntary and professional roles within lighting, sound, stage and video at all levels from crew on drama and musicals to design for band nights and dance shows.

Professional work during my course included being hired by Oldham College as a freelance technician with some design for incoming shows, and causal crew work at Bolton Octagon and the national tour of Oliver at the Manchester Royal Opera House.

November 2008 – ongoing

Full-time Senior Technician at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, UK. Role is predominantly administrative and technical support for both pre-show preparation and in show operation. Includes overseeing casual staff, specifying show hires and some departmental purchases, budgetry and costings, off-site storage management and show set-up and operation. Recently have been made BECTU Branch Secretary.

July 2004 – November 2008

Full time Sound and Lighting Technician at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, UK. Duties include design, set-up and operation of sound reinforcement systems and generic and moving lights. Also includes specifying sound hires, overseeing show staff, and some usage of the in-house powered flying.

Jan 2004 – July 2004

Duty technician at the Lilian Baylis Theatre on an as required basis. Duties included lighting and sound set-up and operation

Apr 1996 – Jan 2004

Technical support and design on a wide mix of amateur, professional and voluntary projects in Bath, Manchester, Bolton and London. Including community theatre, showcases, model shows, conference set-up and small-scale concerts, as well as warehouse work for Blitz Vision. Has also included technical support for Brunel University, City and Islington College, Italia Conti Academy and St Marys College.

Productions include Loyal Women, Blood and Fallout at The Royal Court Theatre, and the opening night gala of Selfridges, Birmingham.

Technician at the Grange Arts, small-scale multi-purpose venue, in Oldham. Duties include lighting, sound, stage and video design, operation and management on a variety of shows.

Specialist Skills:

  • Capable user of Microsoft and Macintosh based software for computer usage.
  • Main experience of audio creation and editing on Peak and ProTools, additional experience with Audacity.
  • Sound playback experience on SCS but also includes Akai samplers, and SFX and a working knowledge of other sound control software, including Showman and G-Type for Windows.
  • Delay hardware is predominantly MediaMatrix but also includes Omnidrive and DME32.
  • Used Amek, Allen and Heath, Cadac, DDA, Midas, Mackie, Soundcraft and Yamaha mixing desks.
  • Experience with Arri, ETC, Jands, Strand and Zero 88 lighting boards.
  • Practical knowledge of hemp, winch and counterweight flying and the Nomad powered flying system and rigging at height.
  • Basic knowledge of moving light first line maintenance of Martin and Vari-Lite.
